GP Champions project

The GP Champions project is a three-year project funded by the Department of Health. It is run by the Association for Young People’s Health in co-ordination with the charity Youth Access and the RCGP Adolescent Health Group.

The aim of the project is to transform the delivery of health services for young people by creating innovative new links between GPs and local voluntary organisations. GPs will benefit from getting more options for referring young people and help with commissioning. The project promotes young people’s health needs within the commissioning agenda and supports improvements to address these.

The project is being piloted in 10 areas, involving both a GP practice and a voluntary youth organisation to share experience and expertise. Project activities include joint events, consultations with young people, and producing a toolkit, which will pull together the learning and provide guidance for rolling out the model to other areas. The project will be independently evaluated and the findings disseminated.
