Investing in Teenage Health – Policy through to Practice
Thursday 15th January 2009, London
This one-day, high level conference focuses on the health needs of young people and will explore the key messages from the Children and Young Peoples Health Strategy and the implications for those who plan and commission services.
Adolescence is a key transition point between childhood and adulthood. It is a distinct developmental stage in its own right characterised by dramatic physical and neurological changes and emotional development. The particular needs of young people require a distinct response. The government has committed to:
Providing more personalised young peoples health services
Improve support that helps young people make healthy choices
Enhance the evidence base to inform policy and practice
Provide more targeted support for vulnerable young people
The day will include evidence from the DH innovative programme ‘Teenage Health Demonstration Sites’ and an introduction to the ‘You’re Welcome’ quality criteria for providing young people friendly health services. There will be concurrent sessions based on the experiences of the four Teenage Health Demonstration Sites to help local areas develop action plans to implement the Strategy.
Key speakers include, David Nicholson CBE, NHS Chief Executive and Dr Sheila Shribman, National Clinical Director for Children, Young People and Maternity.

Staying Positive Workshops
Starts: 14th April 2009
‘Staying Positive’ workshops are being launched throughout the country to give 12 to 18 year olds with long-term health conditions the support they need. The workshops have been introduced to ensure that teenagers have the skills to deal with their conditions in addition to the common issues that face young people in the UK.
The programme has been developed in consultation with young people. Staying Positive is the first programme designed specifically to support this age group. It is run by the Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company (EPPCIC) and involves a series of three one-day workshops, delivered over a period of approximately three months. The aim is to help participants feel less isolated, help them develop skills and techniques to manage their illness, learn from others, talk about their problems and develop solutions.
The next event is: Arthritis Care (North England) Open Day on 14 April 2009
