Skill event on post-16 education

Starts: 4th November 2008
The future for disabled learners in the changing post-16 landscape

The landscape of post-16 learning is definitely changing. The raising of the participation age and machinery of government changes will affect all learners, but this conference gives delegates the opportunity to consider the impact on disabled learners and how can we ensure that provision and services are not only maintained but improved. Skill’s conference will also focus on what these changes will mean for the half a million learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities in further education and training who do not have higher support needs but whose additional needs should not be overlooked.

Investing in Teenage Health – Policy through to Practice
Thursday 15th January 2009, London

This one-day, high level conference focuses on the health needs of young people and will explore the key messages from the Children and Young Peoples Health Strategy and the implications for those who plan and commission services.

Adolescence is a key transition point between childhood and adulthood. It is a distinct developmental stage in its own right characterised by dramatic physical and neurological changes and emotional development. The particular needs of young people require a distinct response. The government has committed to:

Providing more personalised young peoples health services
Improve support that helps young people make healthy choices
Enhance the evidence base to inform policy and practice
Provide more targeted support for vulnerable young people

The day will include evidence from the DH innovative programme ‘Teenage Health Demonstration Sites’ and an introduction to the ‘You’re Welcome’ quality criteria for providing young people friendly health services. There will be concurrent sessions based on the experiences of the four Teenage Health Demonstration Sites to help local areas develop action plans to implement the Strategy.

Key speakers include, David Nicholson CBE, NHS Chief Executive and Dr Sheila Shribman, National Clinical Director for Children, Young People and Maternity.
