Launch of employment strategy
A new employment strategy for people with learning disabilities 'Valuing Employment Now' has been launched by the government.
The strategy sets out an ambitious goal to radically increase the number of people with learning disabilities in employment by 2025.
The strategy includes action to raise expectations throughout the system that all people with learning disabilities can and should have the chance to work: from birth and early years through education, among health and social care staff, local authorities, employment agencies, employers, and people with learning disabilities themselves and their families.
Speaking at the launch, Scott Watkin, who has a learning disability and was recently appointed by the Department of Health as the new co-national director for learning disabilities, stated "I know from personal experience how important it is for a person with a learning disability to have a paid job....this job has changed my life, given me confidence and I feel valued in my role".
